Rookie Lifeguard is for all who are interested in lifeguarding and live saving; aimed at 8 – 12 year olds. Once they reach about 12 years old, we look to move them onto the Survive & Save programme / National Lifesaving Academy within the club.
Our Rookies train alongside the National Lifesaving Academy group, at Cygnet LC on a Saturday afternoon, or Cobham Hall School on a Sunday evening. The sessions cost £20 per month, per swimmer and this gives access to all sessions. Check out the information sheet on the website under Joining Details.
For most children, Rookie Lifeguard will be the first opportunity to explore water safety and alternative safe aquatic play. The Rookie skills make Rookies aware of how to take better care of themselves, their family and friends, and give them the information they need to promote water safety in their day to day activities. The awards contain survival, rescue and sports skills as well as Life Support and water safety elements.
Starting with Stage 1 of the Bronze Award and progressing through to Stage 3 of the Gold Award, Rookie Lifeguard begins at an ability suitable for most abilities as long as children can swim. It doesn’t aim to teach swimming and we do an assessment of children’s ability prior to them starting the group.
